Nutrition
Each county has an organization which provides meals to older adults in the county. The meals are either available at a congregate or group site, or as meals delivered to the homes for homebound individuals. The programs are funded by Title III-C of the Older Americans Act, and are available without charge to the participant. Each site has a suggested contribution that participants are asked to make, to help meet the costs of providing the meals. Meal sites may accept food stamps for the "suggested donation." Those receiving home delivered meals are also given a suggested donation amount, again to help defray the costs of providing the meals.
In addition to these programs funded by the Older Americans Act, meals are also available in the community through "Meals on Wheels" organizations. These are privately run, voluntary organizations that rely on fees charged for the meals. These fees are based on the actual cost of providing the meal.
Congregate or Group Meal Sites
This service provides a hot, nutritious meal five or more days per week. In some areas, evening or weekend service may also be available. These meals sites are usually housed in senior centers, senior housing complexes or community churches. The program is open to anyone aged 60 or over, and their spouses (regardless of age). Reservations are required, usually at least 24 hours in advance, for all meal sites.
Home Delivered Meals
This service provides a nutritious meal delivered to the homes of older individuals who are homebound due to illness, incapacitating disability, or isolation. In some areas, programs make available meals for holidays, weekends or evening service. Individuals must be 60 or over to be eligible, and must undergo a formal needs assessment to participate.
