Senior Service Levies

Under Ohio law, property tax levies are allowable for the provision of services to adults age 60 and over. Ohio is one of five states in the country that allow such levies. Levies may be enacted for a maximum of five years, then must be placed before the voters for renewal. Senior service levies are in place in more than 60 counties, municipalities or townships across the state. Funds generated each year through these property tax levies total an estimated $90,000,000!

In northeast Ohio, there are property tax levies currently in place in Ashtabula and Trumbull counties.

Ashtabula County Senior Service Levy
The Senior Service Levy in Ashtabula County was originally approved by the voters in March 2000. It was renewed in May 2005 by a 66% approval rate. The levy is a one mill property tax levy that generates approximately $1.4 million each year.

The Ashtabula County Senior Service Levy funds prescription assistance, in-home care, transportation, protective services and education and wellness programs through a network of service providers around the county. Because of the levy funds, services are now available to older adults in every township in the county, which is the largest geographically in the state.

The Ashtabula County Department of Job and Family Services administers levy funds in the county under the guidance of an Advisory Council appointed by the Ashtabula County Board of Commissioners. Contact the Department of Job and Family Services at 440-994-2050.

Trumbull County Senior Service Levy
The Trumbull County Senior Service Levy was approved by voters in November 2005. It is a ¾ mill property tax levy, which generates approximately $2.4 million dollars each year.

The Trumbull County Senior Service Levy funds in-home services, protective services, community services provided through a network of senior centers, adult day care, home delivered meals, prescription drug assistance and transportation services. The Trumbull Senior Services Levy also uses a network of service providers, who provide service to all areas of the county.

The Trumbull County Senior Service Levy is administered by Area Agency on Aging 11, Inc. under the guidance of an Advisory Council appointed by the Trumbull County Board of Commissioners. Contact the Senior Levy office at 330-675-7846.
